What To Expect

At Florida Sleep Solutions, Inc, we offer a variety services to help diagnose and treat sleep disorders. Our services range from diagnostic testing, to therapy modalities, to offering various supplements to assist with obtaining a goodnight sleep. We have the tools and experts to help you through your journey of improving the quality of your sleep. Good sleep requires so much more than simply closing your eyes, it begins with how we live each day, the activities we do and the food that we eat. We look at sleep from many different sides which help us treat each patient differently.

The first step is to get an accurate picture of what happens when you sleep. We do this through various diagnostic testing which is easy to do and painless. The testing can be done in the facility or at home, depending on the exact disorder we are looking for. We have credentialed sleep specialist who exam every aspect of your sleep and determine whether anything is affecting the quality of the sleep. If so, then a therapy recommendation is provided by one of our Board Certified Sleep Specialist. We offer consultations to sit and discuss your sleep with our physicians and nurse practitioners.

What to expect In-Lab testing

An in-lab sleep study involves an overnight stay at one of our facilities. These environments are set up to make you as comfortable as possible so you can have a full night’s sleep. Our bedrooms are set-up with queen size beds, night stands and flat screened TV’s. We offer rooms that have recliners for patients who cannot sleep in abed. When you are ready to go to bed, the sleep technologist will attach sensors to your body. These sensors are applied using a paste or tape, neither of which will cause any pain. Please notify your sleep technologist if you have any allergies or sensitivities to the products they are applying. The sensors measure your:

  • Brain waves
  • Chin muscle activity
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing
  • Oxygen levels
  • Leg movements

The wires are long enough to let you move around and turn over in bed. At the start of the test, you will be asked to do various things like blink your eyes, grind your teeth and move your feet. These actions are needed for the technologist to ensure all the sensors are working properly. You are free to relax and watch TV or read until your normal bedtime, or lights out. The technologist may ask you to try and sleep earlier to ensure they have plenty of time to acquire the necessary data for the physician. If you have an unusual bedtime or sleep routine, please notify the staff prior to scheduling the appointment.

The technologist will monitor you from the tech station, located near the rooms. They see using a camera and infrared light to monitoring in the dark. If you need anything, or need to use the restroom, they will come in and assist. Most patients will not sleep as well as they do at home, this is partly because of the sensors and most likely being in a strange place. Don’t worry; this rarely will have an impact on the results.

In the morning the technologist will test and then remove the sensors. You may be asked to fill out a morning questionnaire that asks about the quality of your sleep and your experience in the sleep center. The in-lab study is complete once you are awake and the sensors have been removed.

The results of your testing typically take 5 – 7 business days. During that time, a Registered Polysomnographer will review every 30 seconds of your sleep and document information for the physician. The Board Certified Sleep Specialist will then review the data and render an interpretation. Often times, the physician will consult with the night sleep technologist and the scoring technologist to ensure the interpretation is accurate and the recommendation is appropriate. If you need the results quicker than normal, please notify the staff so they can accommodate.
